Medal Presentations in Hong Kong
Representatives of the World Education Games team, Paul McMahon and Andrew Smith attended the medal presentation for Hong Kong students Gordon C and Katie C at German Swiss International school, Hong Kong.
Gordon placed 7th globally for World Maths Day and 2nd in World Spelling Day, both in the 8-10 division.
Katie placed 40th globally in World Maths Day and was the top Hong Kong student in the 4-7 age division.
Paul McMahon shares some of his experiences of these medal presentations below.
“One of the most pleasurable duties I have as Regional Manager for 3P Learning, the Mathletics/World Maths Day company, is to visit schools and present awards to students and classes for their efforts in our fantastically well supported annual competitions.
This year I have had the great pleasure of visiting a number of schools in the New Territorities of Hong Kong. These schools have been in places where they mainly exist to support the government housing estates that surround them. Far from the normal image of Hong Kong as gleaming new skyscrapers overlooking a busy harbour, these schools are over an hour’s travel to Central and a journey over the border to mainland China would be a much shorter trip.
It is clear from the reception that I receive and the very broad smiles on the faces of the prize recipients that these students do not get to partake in global competitions very often. In fact, it is more likely that these students rarely leave the confines of their immediate surrounds. Although Hong Kong is a small City State, it is not unusual to run into people who only know small parts of it. Such is the Chinese way of life that cleverly and efficiently brings everything that you need to your doorstep.
The fact that the World Education Games offer a chance for a classroom anywhere in the world to participate, with the only requirement being access to the Internet, is an incredibly enabling thing for these students.
Every one of these schools have said that they will “see me back next year” when I will have more awards to give them.
I am hoping that they are right!”

Australian Ambassador Hamish Meets Adam Spencer
I just wanted to say thanks to all the people at World Maths Day for giving me the opportunity to represent New South Wales as an ambassador for World Maths Day 2011. I learnt a lot, got to meet Adam Spencer, go to the Sydney Apple store and best of all I had a really wonderful time. I had my photo in the local paper, and well, I can’t forget about the iPod. I will remember the experience for a long time.
Thanks to everyone who helped and contributed. I think that World Maths Day is a great event, and I am looking forward to World Maths Day 2012!
A Message From The 4 – 7 Years World Maths Day Champion Eric Z
Hi, this is Eric Z. I am 7 year old. I am in the beginning of Year 2 at Palmerston Distric Primary School in Canberra, Australia. This is the first year that I attend the World Maths Day Competition. I am glad that I did well in this competition, but my hands and fingers also got tired. You know you have to try really hard to be in the top 10.
I started to do Mathletics when I was 5 years old. I like to play it because I can learn math and get credits. I like playing against other students on Mathletics. Sometimes I even versed very good players, like Aaron H who ranked 11th in the 11-13 group.
I want to attend this World Maths Day event next year too!
