World Maths Day Success in Scotland

In March, Iain Smith, Mathletics National Manager for Scotland and Northern Ireland, visited Hamilton College to present Ambassador Olivia G with her iPod touch.  Ian returned to Hamilton College recently to present Sharon M with a World Maths Day medal.  Sharan was the top Scottish performer in World Maths Day and fourth in the World in the ages 9-13 age group.  Congratulations!  They both featured in In Touch magazine this month.

News from our Ambassador in Hong Kong

Hi guys, Jackalyn C from Hong Kong speaking here…

I went to Shanghai for a trip from May 20th to May 22nd. I always ask questions so that I will learn more. So, I asked my mother on the airplane, “If I have 100 Chinese Yuan, how much is that in Hong Kong dollars?” My mom did not know how to answer me. So I tried to figure it out by myself, using Maths, of course. (The answer is $115).

When we were on the airplane, I looked at my watch and remembered the time. When the plane landed, I looked at my watch again and calculated the time. I just love using Maths to solve problems.

On Monday, our year level went to the park in Kowloon Tong to study about Chinese history.

Engaging my Math’s brain, I calculated the time from when we left school to when we returned. We returned 1 hour early because of all the mosquito bites on my classmates’ hands and legs! I asked my teacher, Mr. Rowse, so many times to let me take a picture of him in front of the mighty canon (real one). But, sadly there was no time. Below is a picture of me in front of the canon, with a surprised face!

A message from Hong Kong Ambassador Jackalyn C

Hi guys, doesn’t time past quickly! Because now it is my 2nd blog!

Over these last few weeks, I’ve had friends who asked me problems and then – you know what I used to solve it? – MATHS! Our school had a World Classroom trip. It’s when we go to different countries on an airplane, without our parents. I had to use Maths to help me calculate how much money I had used and how much I had left! Below is a picture of me in Taiwan with (a fake) Mona Lisa!

On World Maths Day, I had the experience of how to be brave to stand up and speak in front of many people. I walked around the school for about an hour going in and out of classrooms, I talked about World Maths Day and its website. Being an ambassador is certainty not easy.  Maths is fun and exciting! Speed is not the importance of Maths but accuracy! Keep on playing, I’ll join in as soon as possible!

Wait for my 3rd blog! See you then! Below is a picture of my class having a good time in Taiwan in front of the Jiang Jie Shi Memorial Hall.

Well done everyone for breaking last year’s record! I think we all did very well. I’d like to congratulate my fellow team Australia ambassadors Kaya G, for coming 1st in the 9-13 year old catagory and Tatiana D, for coming 2nd in the 14-18 year old. well done!

After all this excitement, I think I need to relax a bit or maybe I should do more maths homework for next year’s World Maths Day event.

I wish every one good luck for next year and may we break this year’s record next year.

GOOD LUCK!!!

Adrian E, World Maths Day Ambassador

A message from Canada Ambassador, Kierra G

Hi Everyone,

Just a quick thank you to the organizers for World Math Day!  Our carnival was awesome!  “Math is fun!” was the biggest comment from the participants.

“It was all about math and it was good!”

“Math is exciting”.

“We learned we need math for a lot of things”.

“It was nice of [the grade fours] to help us with our math”

“It was worth missing our gym class”

“The questions were fun!” said the grade two class.

Top Northland School Division No. 61 prizes are: $100 for top score in each of the four divisions, $75 for second in each of the four divisions and $50 for third in each of the four divisions. [With prize money from our AISI grant].  News about the winners coming soon!!

I was flown to Calgary and had dinner with the other ambassadors from Canada and it was really cool!  We went everywhere in a white limousine and had dinner at the Calgary Tower!  Did you know that it spins around when you eat?  I met people from Ontario and Alberta and Saskatchewan.  We went to Breakfast TV where two of the ambassadors got to go on TV and play on the World Math Day site.  We went to a school and we practiced on their computers for World Math Day.  After that we went to dinner in the Calgary Tower.  I had soup and fries.  We were close to the windows and I could look outside when we ate.  The trip was exciting.

As ambassador, it has been a lot of work but it also has been fun.  I hope you enjoyed World Math Day.

Special thanks,

Kierra G

Mathletics Ambassador for Northland School Division No. 61, Alberta, Canada

Well done from Australian Ambassador Grace P

Hi Everyone

World Maths Day is over, and we broke the the record !!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks everyone for uniting together and helping us to reach this great milestone on World Maths Day.

Everyone at my school was involved on the day, with each class taking a turn to make the total higher.

It doesn’t matter if you only answered 1 or 2 questions because for all we know it might of been that 1 or 2 questions that helped us beat the world record. I’m sure everyone had a great time. Isn’t it cool how, when you you think about it, that you made a contribution to this record ? So, keep practising your Mathletics for next year. See you then !!!!!!
