The Final Hour

There’s just over an hour left of the World Math Day event and the Mathometer is still ticking! Over 565 Million correct answers and counting.

Congratulations to everyone who has been involved– you should all be very, very proud! And it’s not too early to start practicing for next year! World Math Day 2011 will be here before you know it.

Enjoy this last hour, everyone.

What students are saying

If you’re taking a short break from participating in World Math Day, take a few moments to read this great blog entry about what some students from Shanghai American School are saying about World Math Day!

Amazing Numbers!

Everywhere you look on the World Math Day site, you can see amazing numbers! The number of people participating: amazing. The number of different countries participating: amazing. The Mathometer: amazing! And the Hall of Fame: well, for lack of a better word, it’s… amazing!

Here are some close-up looks:

Manu N. from India is leading the 9-13 age category among students, and also has the top number among students across all ages! Way to go, Manu N.! At the time of this entry, his number of correct answers is 29465! To use our favorite word in this post, that’s pretty amazing, right?  And with 25858 correct answers, Ahmed E. from Saudi Arabia is close behind in that category. They are some mathletes to watch!

Leading the Classes category overall is  Narva Pahklimae Gumnaasium 4A Klass Zjorny from Estonia, with 304521 correct answers! I think you know what I’m going to say about that: it’s amazing!

Great work everyone, and keep it up! As you know, World Math Day has been extended! Here are the new finishing times.

Hall of Fame Update

Good Morning from the U.S. where it is, at last, officially World Math Day!

Congratulations to everyone who has participated so far– there are some really impressive numbers on the Hall of Fame page and the Mathometer keeps on ticking so quickly!! You should all be so proud of your inspiring accomplishments.

Here are some highlights of where we are right now:

Avalon Elementary 3rd grade from the U.S. continues to produce impressive scores in the Classes category for ages 5-8, but our Lady of Lourdes Primary from the U.K. is close behind. Will Avalon be able to keep their lead? We’ll see! Keep checking the Hall of Fame page for up-to-the-minute tallies.

In the Students category for ages 14-18, the top 2 scorers are very close: Arthur T. from Hong Kong and Shahmir A. from Pakistan are neck-and-neck.  Good work to you both.

The Parents and Teachers are producing great numbers, but they are no match for students and classes of all age levels and from all countries! Way to go, students!

U.S. leads the Classes category

The United States is taking the lead in the Classes category! Avalon is still in first place, with 3 of the top 5 classes being from the USA. A whopping 7 out of the top 10 classes are from the United States! Congratulations all around!! But can the U.S. keep the lead as once other schools around the world are back in session?  We’ll see…

Keep up the good work, everyone. And, most importantly, keep having fun!

Teachers/Parents Update

Since this year is the first time we’ve invited Parents, Teachers, and Media to participate, we thought we should give them some attention!

Here’s a little update of how they’re doing:

Audrey T from Team Malaysia is in the lead with 9132 correct answers so far! But close behind her is Alen M from Uruguay with 8612 points in 196 games! Having played only 8 games more than Audrey T, Alen M could catch up quickly! Trailing very narrowly behind them is Anita P from Croatia, followed by Mina M from Egypt. Rounding out the top 5, we have Miss Ali B from Thailand. All excellent scores, and the games are still being played!

Thanks to all the parents, teachers, and media who are participating! We’re following you closely!

Happy World Math Day from the U.S.

Congratulations to everyone who is participating in World Math Day! As I post this, there are already over 71 Million correct answers, and the Mathometer tally is rising so quickly, it’s hard to keep up!

For Team USA, Avalon Elementary School 3rd grade is in the lead in their category!! Way to go, Avalon!

It is truly inspiring to see all the different leaders from different countries in all the categories. Take a moment to look at the Hall of Fame and see what an international event you are part of! Everyone should be very proud.

And it’s not even March 3rd yet in the United States! Still plenty of time to play and be part of this amazing event. We’re looking forward to all the great Math that will be done in the coming hours. Keep up the good work, everyone!!!

Scott Flansburg, The Human Calculator, on Fox News Sunday Morning

Scott Flansburg, the Human Calculator and Patron of World Math Day, appeared on Fox News Sunday morning to talk about World Math Day. This was his second appearance of the week. He was invited back after an appearance on Fox and Friends on Friday, and was asked to explain how to get kids excited about Math. Flansburg also demonstrated his remarkable ability to calculate equations in his head, counting by multiples of 29, to the amazement of the show’s hosts. See video here.
