White Lightning!

We were delighted to visit Netherhall School in Cambridgeshire UK this week to congratulate Daniel W and his classmates for their huge success on World Maths Day! Daniel came 10th in the UK and 56th in the world for his age category, beating thousands of competitors and earning over 25,000 points during the event by working at lightning speed!

Congratulations to Daniel and everyone at Netherhall! We look forward to seeing you in the number one spot next year!

News from Scotland….

Recently, Iain Smith (3P Learning’s National Manager for Scotland) attended a special assembly held at Hamilton College Junior School to present J7 pupil Olivia G with a certificate and an iPod touch to commemorate her term as our UK Mathletics Ambassador.

Well done to Olivia and her team – they did a great job to raise awareness of Mathletics, putting posters up around the school and the local area and featured on REAL Radio on the morning of World Maths Day.

Our World Maths Day in Serbia..

As we all know, World Maths Day is a truly global event – and nowhere was this more brilliantly demonstrated than at the British International School of Belgrade, in Serbia. The top scoring student at the school is originally from Angola, the second from Japan, and third from Serbia – global winners for a truly global competition!

Students at the school answered over 350,000 questions (and the teachers put on a great show with over 60,000 mathematical questions correctly answered during this event!!!)

Deputy Principal Neil Howie said “The students and staff thoroughly enjoyed the event, and playing against students throughout the world. There will be a special award ceremony for our outstanding students, one of whom achieved over 13,000 correct answers durint the event. We can’t wait until next year’s even bigger event!”

See you next year, Serbia!

A final word from Dubai…

Hey guys, how are you all? I hope you guys hadn’t stayed up too late to compete in the world Maths day competition during the 48 hours period. First of all, the best congratulations to all participants for trying hard and I think, a lot of certificates are being given away for accomplishing 4000 points. Also I would say the greatest congratulations to all winners from each age group. I’m very impressed with all your scores. How could you guys calculate while typing the answers so fast??

And don’t worry, I didn’t forget to congratulate all the ambassadors from all the different countries as well, because we all contributed in helping advertising this event so that it had made it into the Guinness World Records!!

Although I felt that the questions in this year’s world maths day were a little harder than the previous year’s, I felt that it made it an even more challenge instead of playing only easy maths that we already know how to do. So it actually improved people’s math skills even more while playing games.

I’m very happy that the number of correct answers achieved in this year’s world maths day has beaten the number of correct answers from last year. This proves that the world has been united in numbers. And I hope the event will be even bigger next year, because this year’s number has set the bar so high, for the event in 2011.

Well, I hope to see you all next year! While setting even higher high scores :D

Our World Maths Day – by Priyanka R

Hi, Ambassador Priyanka here from the UK!

Wow! We had a fantastic day today. It was the day of our much awaited launch party – “The Ambassador’s Ball“.

I had to do a speech in front of the whole school and I told everyone about how interesting Mathletics is and how it helps to expand our knowledge of maths.

There was a big rectangular box painted blue with a big LAUNCH button on top. We started the countdown 10, 9, 8, 7, 6…. and I pushed down on the big button with my friend Shadene as soon as the clock struck 11am. My other friend Sophie hit the gong. We had party poppers and streamers and then there was a loud applause from the audience.  I also had my friend Gaby holding a plate of Ferreo Roches chocolates that we gave out as prizes to who ever scored the most points during our Kings and Queens Mathletic slots.

Wishing everyone luck,

Ambassador Priyanka

My World Maths Day, by Maria H

Hi guys, Maria here – Ambassador for Northern Ireland…

So, its World Maths Day at last! Woohoo! We got a mention on the radio – and I might be on air for an interview tomorrow discussing the World Record (fingers crossed we break the record!)

Every one got a chance to play today – that’s teachers included!  Miss Moody didn’t meet that ‘child genius’ Kaya G from Australia again (thank goodness) but she did lose out a few times. Loads of high scores – the best from juniors was 48 and the best from seniors was 52 (but that was from a highly trained mathlete!) All those high scores in just one game! Makes my brain hurt even thinking about it!!! Good to see I’m not the only one; some people were tearing their hair out literally!

Happy World Maths Day guys hope u have had as much fun as I have had! CLICK HERE to check out our video from yesterday…

One word? WOW!

It seems amazing to be typing this, but the Mathometer has just ticked over the staggering milestone of 500 MILLION correct answers – that is truly amazing! Well done to all World Maths Day participants – how much higher will we go??

A message from one of last year’s winners…

We’ve today received a message of support from one of World Maths Day 2009’s medal-winning students – Michael G from Thornaby School in the UK…

“Hello there,

During this wonderful event I have had a science exam and that meant I needed to revise as well as participating in World Maths Day. I think I’ve done well in my science exam, but enough of that – let’s talk about maths! :D

My final total is 16,784 correct answers which I think is brilliant and I hope I get a medal or at least remain on the leader board but I doubt I will as there are so many GREAT MATHMATICIANS out there!!!

Mr teacher, Mr Edwards, said I should be WORLD CHAMPION – I wish I was and I think I deserve it but so do many other people! Sadly I won’t be, but some other EXTREMELY CLEVER and TALENTED pupil will be. So congratulations to whoever wins it!

Last but not least, I hope you all enjoyed World Maths Day 2010 fellow players. Also thank you to the team behind this magnificent maths game which inspires me and over 2 million people into learning and getting vital tools from maths which will help us when we grow up!

An update from Dubai…

Whoa! The server is really busy. 42000 users are online right now. Dubai has been receiving a lot of rain lately, and because of this, some of the roads had been blocked, thus our school has less number of students present. So at school, instead of doing the normal lessons, the school decided to let us just play worldmathsday when it started at 3:00 pm 2 March 2010, Dubai time. Although we don’t have enough computers for everyone in the school, some people used their ipods and played worldmathsday there. Some people actually tried to play in both their laptop and their ipods. Sometimes the buzz sound came on, indicating people made a mistake in their answers, but sometimes as well, people were boasting to their friends that they were 1st in the rank of the game they just played. It wasn’t quite peaceful in our school today. There were many screaming “NO!” when the 60 second period has finished and many people counting out loud. It was a bit surreal looking at hundreds of faces doing mathematics at the same time, whilst finding it enjoyable.

The next day, the school continues with participating in world maths day by taking turns in doing it for the whole day. We had to divide the whole day so that every grade would have their chance to take part. I gave out stickers to the Kindergarten to grade 1-5 who took part in uniting the world with numbers! They really loved it and it motivated them to play more worldmathsday games.

For myself, I kept clicking yes in the option of play again; just wanting to get as much as I can. Sometimes I felt that my brain is calculating by itself without me thinking about it; which is pretty weird. I have to say that the games for worldmathsday are really addictive. I have reached level 3 and really wanting to get to level 4!

Until then,

Felicia!

Happy World Maths Day from Wales

Over the past few weeks we have worked very hard to get lots of people involved in World Maths Day.

Tuesday 2nd March

Today we had a visit from Melanie Walters, the actress who plays Gwen in BBC Television’s Gavin and Stacey series.  She tried on some of our maths hats and she wished us all the very best for World Maths Day.

Just before 11:00 am our class was joined by Mrs Bronwen Jones from the Bristol office of Mathletics.  We were very pleased to have her with us for the official launch of World Maths Day.  She brought extra posters and some World maps with her.  She presented me with a certificate for being the UK-Wales Ambassador for World Maths Day.  Also, she left a surprise for me with Mr Davies which I was going to be presented with at the special school assembly on Wednesday morning.

Wednesday 3rd March

Everyone was really excited this morning.  All the children in school had been given user names and passwords.  Lots of people had gone online already in school and at home to play against other people from around the world.

The day began with a special World Maths Day assembly.  My class wore their maths hats and all the children in school had a sticker to wear.  Mr Davies showed us the World Maths Day website and talked about the number of users on-line and the number of correctly answered questions.  It was amazing to see how many people and countries were taking part.  Jamie in my class had played someone from the Marshall Islands while he was waiting to have his breakfast earlier in the day.  During the assembly, Mrs Martell, the headteacher, read out a letter we had received from HRH Prince Charles thanking Ellie in my class for telling him all about World Maths Day.  It was fantastic to get a letter from a member of the royal family.

After the assembly we went back to class and we took turns to do World Maths Day.  After play we had another visitor; this time it was Dr. Alex Potrykus who is a Mathematics lecturer from Swansea University.  He was very impressed by the idea of World Maths Day and he could see how much it was helping us with our maths.  We have plans for Dr Potrykus to come back to our school in the future to do some maths challenges with our classes.

We spent the rest of the day taking turns on the computers, very keen to help everyone around the world achieve a Guinness world record.  When we come back tomorrow morning (Thursay 4th March) we’ll know if we’ve managed to do this.  We certainly hope so!
