Hello everyone from Wanganui, New Zealand

Wanganui Collegiate School’s St George’s Campus had a special visitor this morning – Whanganui Member of Parliament Chester Borrows.

Mr Borrows came to the St George’s Campus to support us and went one-on-one with our top mathematicians and won – 6 games to 4! Our computer Lab has been a hive of activity since 7.15am this morning, and students will continue tonight. Our aim is to get as many students as possible into the World Hall of Fame.

Mr Borrows loved competing with students from around the world, including Canada, the United States, and Mexico. He also wrote a letter to all St George’s students, encouraging them to participate in World Maths Day.

“Congratulations to St George’s for participating in World Maths Day – the ability to understand and use maths easily is a key to success in our lives – just like the ability to read, communicate, get along with one another, and be responsible people,” Mr Borrows said.

The students really enjoyed his visit, with lots of cheering and clapping as he competed with them.

Maths teacher Paula Conder said it was great to host Mr Borrows, who took time out of his busy Parliamentary schedule to pay a visit to the campus.

News from the UK launch event

Well, here we are! After twelve months of waiting, World Maths Day 2010 is upon us. Here in the UK, World Maths Day began at 11am, and within the first hour over 23,000 Brits were online  – fantastic!

As I type I am en route back to the World Maths Day offices, after attending our launch event here in the UK, so this news is hot off the press! It’s been a really exciting morning, hosted in the prestigious surroundings of the Learning Zone @ Wembley Stadium in London. A large group of school children from neighbouring schools joined in the morning of celebrations in the run up to “zero hour”.

We were joined at the event by several members of the media and a TV film crew, so students had  great fun being interviewed and talking about their excitement, while having a few practice games to warm up their fingers and maths brains. Later in the morning we were joined by Rachel Riley from the UK TV show Countdown, who was really excited to be able to come along, show her support and join in the fun!

As the seconds ticked away, our group of excited students gathered together for the final countdown to 11am. 5….4….3….2….1…. GO! With cheering and clapping students raced to their laptops to start earning their first competition points.

World Maths Day 2010 has kicked off in the UK with a bang, with schools right across the country holding their own launch day parties. As the hours tick by and countries further west start waking up, the event can only get bigger and bigger! How is your country marking the launch of World Maths  Day?
