Hi guys, Jackalyn C from Hong Kong speaking here…

I went to Shanghai for a trip from May 20th to May 22nd. I always ask questions so that I will learn more. So, I asked my mother on the airplane, “If I have 100 Chinese Yuan, how much is that in Hong Kong dollars?” My mom did not know how to answer me. So I tried to figure it out by myself, using Maths, of course. (The answer is $115).

When we were on the airplane, I looked at my watch and remembered the time. When the plane landed, I looked at my watch again and calculated the time. I just love using Maths to solve problems.

On Monday, our year level went to the park in Kowloon Tong to study about Chinese history.

Engaging my Math’s brain, I calculated the time from when we left school to when we returned. We returned 1 hour early because of all the mosquito bites on my classmates’ hands and legs! I asked my teacher, Mr. Rowse, so many times to let me take a picture of him in front of the mighty canon (real one). But, sadly there was no time. Below is a picture of me in front of the canon, with a surprised face!

Here are our World Maths Day friends at the British School of Bahrain. They obviously got up to a fair bit on 3 March 2010. Here are some of the activities they were involved in as part of celebrating World Maths Day.

Saphira Isa, one of the teachers says.

“We of course had the kids taking part in WMD, but also had a big balloon release competition, we sold fractions of pizza and squash at break, we had a heaviest potato competition, we played mass bingo (with 500 children taking part!) We also had a junior school competition to find the maths whizz champions for years 3,4,5 and 6 – and we held our final live on air on Radio Bahrain! We got a lot of press coverage!”

The school even achieved an official World Record for their school balloon launch. So that’s two World Records and counting achieved on WMD 2010.

Hi guys, doesn’t time past quickly! Because now it is my 2nd blog!

Over these last few weeks, I’ve had friends who asked me problems and then – you know what I used to solve it? – MATHS! Our school had a World Classroom trip. It’s when we go to different countries on an airplane, without our parents. I had to use Maths to help me calculate how much money I had used and how much I had left! Below is a picture of me in Taiwan with (a fake) Mona Lisa!

On World Maths Day, I had the experience of how to be brave to stand up and speak in front of many people. I walked around the school for about an hour going in and out of classrooms, I talked about World Maths Day and its website. Being an ambassador is certainty not easy. Maths is fun and exciting! Speed is not the importance of Maths but accuracy! Keep on playing, I’ll join in as soon as possible!

Wait for my 3rd blog! See you then! Below is a picture of my class having a good time in Taiwan in front of the Jiang Jie Shi Memorial Hall.
