Johannesburg, South Africa – Host City 2010
This is going to be a big year for South Africa, not only is it hosting the 2010 Football World Cup but it’s also the host for World Maths Day 2010! A media release went out in January to confirm the news that everyone had been hoping for. An excerpt follows:
‘Johannesburg has been awarded the prestigious title of host city for this year’s World Maths Day to be held on 3 March and it looks to be bigger and better than ever!’
We’re hoping to announce our South African World Maths Day 2010 ambassadors soon. In the meantime it might be interesting for you to do some research and find out more about the city of Johannesburg, here are some interesting facts that we liked:
- It is the world’s largest city not situated on a river, lake, or coastline… cool!
- Johannesburg is well known to be a source of a gold – I might go mining there!
- Johannesburg is located in the eastern plateau area of South Africa known as the Highveld, at an elevation of 1,753 metres (5,751 ft)… that’s pretty high up.
