An Update from USA Ambassador Eric X

Hello everyone! There are only a few more days until World Maths Day and I am very excited. Everyone at my school has been working hard and practicing Mathletics, and the school’s computer lab is starting to fill up with students competing each other on World Maths Day. I am promoting this upcoming event during my school lunch and recess and encouraging my friends to join. In addition, the school has posted the date on the daily announcements and bulletin.

Good luck to all the participants and I am looking forward to World Maths Day on March 3, 2010. I hope we will beat last year’s high score!

Greetings from Australian Ambassador, Adrian E

Hi I’m Adrian, I am the Ambassador from South Australia. I live in Adelaide and go to Hendon Primary school and I am in grade 7.

Hendon is really hurrying in the preparations for WMD and is buzzing with excitement, as it is only around the corner!

I was lucky enough to be invited to go to Sydney and meet the people behind WMD, the other Ambassadors for team Australia and also Leisel Jones, the three-time gold medallist Olympic swimmer. At Middle harbour primary school all of the 8 Ambassadors received a special engraved iPod touch and afterwards the Ambassadors got to play in the computer lab against the students of Middle Harbour primary, which was really fun.

At the 3P Learning office the Ambassadors met in the board room to discuss how to advertise WMD to 100,000 people and I was also lucky to have met Tatiana and Kaya who were world champions in the WMD event in 2008 and 2009.

I hope we beat last year’s record and set a new one for next year!!!

Wouldn’t it be cool to get into the Guinness Book of World Records?!

Hi from Tatiana D, Australian Ambassador

Hey I’m Tatiana, and I’m an Ambassador from Victoria, Australia. Hasn’t it been great hearing all the news about World Maths Day from so many people around the world!!

It’s great to hear all of the stories of students getting prepared for World Maths Day in the blogs. I particularly enjoyed the blog from Cristian M in Guatemala about the story of the boy in his school who reached the top of the WMD ladder using two broken arms! Isn’t that incredible! It is truly an inspirational story, and I hope it encourages everyone to try as hard as they can to do their very best this year.

A few days ago, the Australian Ambassadors (8 in total) flew to Sydney for a launch event. It was really exciting! We started off by attending an Ambassador’s dinner and the food was delicious!

The next day, we went to the World Maths Day office where we had a briefing on the competition and what our roles as Ambassadors were. We met some representatives from PR company, One Green Been who went through ways we could talk about World Maths Day to people and to the media. We were then fortunate enough to meet Leisel Jones, a three-time Olympic gold medallist in swimming. She shared some of her experiences with us of competing at world level and how she got over some of the hurdles in her career. She also signed a lot of autographs for us! We then travelled to Middle Harbour Public School for a special World Maths Day assembly, where we also were presented with an iPod touch, World Maths Day t-shirt and certificate. Afterwards, we got the opportunity to play on the World Maths Day website with the students, and talk to them, which was a lot of fun! After our time at Middle Harbour Public School, we went back to the WMD office and brainstormed ways we could get as many people involved as possible in World Maths Day.

When taking part in World Maths Day this year, the most important thing to remember is to HAVE FUN!! I hope that everyone is able to do this during World Maths Day this year!!!!

Hello from Danielle P, Australian Ambassador

Hey, this is Danielle from WA.

Thank you Liz, John, Andrew and Tim for bringing all the Australian Ambassadors together in Sydney! It was an awesome experience and it was great meeting everyone and hopefully I will see you online on World Maths Day.  A special thank you to Leisel Jones for supporting World Maths Day and spending time with all of us.  It was another highlight of my trip to Sydney.

So, World Maths Day is just around the corner and Clarkson Community High School is really busy with preparations for a lets “Celebrate World Maths Day” evening.   Parents and students can go online and trial the program to see how it is set up for the 3rd of March, 2010.  The new World Maths Day format is really great and a lot more challenging, keeping everyone on their toes with every random question!

Weather in Perth is really hot and humid right now so everyone is double eager to hop in the air-conditioned library and computer labs for some extra practise time. Can’t wait for World Maths Day! Hopefully we break a Guinness World Record this year. Good luck to everyone participating in World Maths Day and best of luck to all the schools around the world!!

Cheers from Perth

Danielle

Hello from Grace P, Ambassador for Australia

My name is Grace P and I’m one of the World Maths Day Ambassadors for New South Wales. I just got into Year 6 at Middle Harbour Public School, and it’s pretty awesome!

School is much better than the last few weeks of holidays when I was sitting around doing nothing. I like drawing, especially Japanese anime. I go to ballet six days a week (two hours most days) which makes a total of twelve hours a week. I have just advanced to pointe. I also love High Jump and I have been to School Zone Competition three times. Last time I was at Zone I came third, just one place away from going to Area Competition. And of course I like Mathletics which I have been doing for four years now. I even used it from Belgium where I was living for a year across 2008 and 2009.

My school was very excited to host the Australian launch of World Maths Day. One of Australia’s greatest swimmers, Liesel Jones, was there as the guest of honour. She told us about the gold medals she had won, and how she had swum in her first Olympics when she was only fifteen. She was big inspiration for all of us and it showed us how dedication and hard work can take you a long way.

It was great meeting all the other ambassadors on Launch Day and they were all really friendly. I look forward to seeing them compete on the big day against the rest of the world!

Bye for now!

Grace P

Greetings from Ibrahim S, Ambassador for Qatar

Salaam Alaykoom (greetings!) fellow mathematicians,

The excitement is really building here at Al Khor International School in Qatar in the Middle East. Everyone is busy designing posters about the different Maths concepts and very arty geometrically designed ones for Mr Costello in Year 6’s competitions. Mr Costello has also been really busy. We are holding a huge maths quiz for Year 5 and 6 students on the night of World Maths Day. We are expecting lots of parents and possibly some TV crews to attend to mark World Maths Day at our School.

Although I love sport I am taking time out from it to practice for WMD. I love the new way the competition is being run this year. I have just got a new personal best on level 3 questions.

I can’t wait for the big day to arrive!!

Ma Asalama (goodbye)

Ibrahim
